Merging PDF files combines multiple documents into a single file — an essential task for creating reports, assembling packages, combining chapters, or consolidating records. Here's how to do it for free with no file count limits or watermarks.
How to Merge PDF Files
- Go to the Merge PDF tool.
- Click Upload Files or drag and drop all the PDFs you want to combine.
- Drag the file cards to arrange them in the order you want (the merged PDF will follow this order).
- Click Merge.
- Download the combined PDF.
No limit on file count. You can merge 2 files or 50 files in a single operation.
Getting the Order Right
The merged PDF pages appear in the same order as the file order you set before merging. Each uploaded file appears as a card that you can drag to rearrange.
Tips for ordering:
- Put the cover page or title document first
- Add the table of contents as the second file if you have one
- Group related sections together
- Put appendices and supporting materials last
If you need to reorder pages within a single file before merging, use the Organize PDF tool first to rearrange that file's pages, then merge.
Merging PDFs of Different Page Sizes
If your PDFs have different page sizes (some A4, some Letter, some landscape), the merged output keeps each page at its original size. There is no forced normalization to a single size.
If you want all pages to be the same size before merging, use the Resize PDF tool on each file to standardize to A4 or Letter, then merge.
What to Do After Merging
Add Page Numbers
Long merged documents should have sequential page numbers for easy reference. After merging, run the result through Add PDF Page Numbers to add automatic numbering to every page.
Compress the Result
Merging doesn't reduce file size — if anything, the merged file is roughly the sum of all input files. If the combined PDF is large (for email or sharing), run it through Compress PDF after merging.
A typical 15-file merge of scanned documents totaling 80 MB can compress to 15–25 MB while remaining fully legible.
Add Bookmarks
For long merged documents (50+ pages), consider creating a bookmark structure so readers can navigate between sections. Use the Create PDF Bookmarks tool to add a navigable outline to the merged PDF.
Common Merging Scenarios
Scenario 1: Report Assembly
You have a cover page, executive summary, 5 department reports, and 3 appendices as separate PDFs.
- Upload all 10 files to Merge PDF
- Arrange: cover → executive summary → dept reports in order → appendices
- Merge
- Add page numbers
- Optionally add bookmarks for each section
Scenario 2: Document Package for Submission
Multiple forms, certificates, and supporting documents need to be submitted as one file.
- Upload all documents
- Arrange in the required submission order (check submission guidelines)
- Merge into a single file
- Verify the file size meets the portal's upload limit (compress if needed)
Scenario 3: Combining Scanned Documents
10 physical documents were scanned as separate PDFs. You want one file for the whole archive.
- Upload all scans
- Arrange in logical order (by date, by type, etc.)
- Merge
- Optionally run OCR on the merged result to make it searchable
- Compress to reduce storage size
Scenario 4: Combining a Book with Chapters
12 chapter PDFs need to be combined into a single book.
- Upload all chapters
- Arrange in chapter order
- Merge
- Add page numbers (starting from 1)
- Add bookmarks with chapter names for navigation
Merge vs. Organize Pages: What's the Difference?
Merge PDF: Combines separate PDF files into one document.
Organize PDF: Rearranges, deletes, or duplicates pages within a single PDF file.
If you need to do both — combine files AND rearrange some pages within those files — do it in two steps:
- Use Organize PDF on individual files that need internal page rearrangement
- Then use Merge PDF to combine the reorganized files
Quick Answers
Does merging reduce image quality? No. Merging is a structural operation — it concatenates the internal structures of each PDF. No content is re-encoded or resampled. The quality of each page in the merged output is identical to the quality in the original file.
Is there a maximum number of files I can merge? There's no limit on file count. The total size must be within the file size limit: 50 MB total for free users, 500 MB for paid.
Can I merge password-protected PDFs? No — protected PDFs must have their password removed first (using Unlock PDF) before they can be merged.
Can I merge a PDF with a Word or image file? The Merge PDF tool only accepts PDF files. Convert other formats to PDF first:
- Word → PDF: use Word to PDF
- JPG/PNG → PDF: use JPG to PDF
- Then merge the resulting PDFs
The pages in my merged PDF are in the wrong order. Do I need to re-merge? If you've already merged, use Organize PDF to reorder the pages of the merged file without merging again.
