DPI stands for "dots per inch" and measures print resolution. Higher DPI means more detail in a printed image. 72 DPI is standard for screens, 150 DPI is good for general printing, and 300 DPI is the standard for professional print quality. Above 300 DPI, the difference is virtually invisible to the human eye.
DPI vs PPI
DPI (dots per inch) refers to printer output — physical dots of ink. PPI (pixels per inch) refers to digital images — the number of pixels in each inch on screen. In practice, the terms are often used interchangeably. This calculator works with either interpretation.
Common DPI values
- 72 DPI — Screen/web. Smallest file size but not suitable for printing.
- 150 DPI — Good for everyday printing (documents, flyers, internal reports).
- 300 DPI — Professional print quality (brochures, books, photography).
- 600 DPI — Ultra-high quality. Used for fine art reproduction and detailed line art.
