BMP is uncompressed, so converting to JPEG typically reduces file size by 90-97%. A 6 MB BMP photograph commonly becomes 200-400 KB at high quality settings.
WhiskFile reads the BMP binary header to display bit depth (1/4/8/16/24/32-bit), compression type (None, RLE4, RLE8, Bitfields), image dimensions, alpha channel presence, and the DIB header version (BITMAPINFOHEADER, V4, V5, OS/2).
JPEG doesn't support transparency, so transparent areas in 32-bit alpha BMPs are filled with your chosen background color (White by default). An info banner alerts you when alpha is detected.
JPEG uses lossy compression, so there is some quality reduction. At 85%+ quality, the difference from the uncompressed BMP original is virtually imperceptible for photographs. For sharp-edged graphics or text, consider BMP to PNG instead.
All standard BMP variants: BITMAPINFOHEADER (most common), BITMAPV4, BITMAPV5, OS/2 BITMAPCOREHEADER, and compressed BMPs using RLE4/RLE8 encoding.
