Page numbers help readers navigate documents, reference specific pages in discussions, and maintain document order if pages are printed and shuffled. Many submission requirements — academic papers, court filings, government forms — explicitly require page numbers.

Adding page numbers after creating a PDF is common when merging multiple documents (the originals may have different or no numbering) or when preparing a document for formal submission.

1. Open the WhiskFile Add Page Numbers tool.

2. Upload your PDF.

3. Configure the numbering: choose position (bottom center, bottom right, top right, etc.), format (1, 2, 3 or i, ii, iii or Page 1 of N), font size, and starting number.

4. Optionally exclude specific pages from numbering (common for title pages or cover sheets).

5. Click "Add Page Numbers" and download the result.

**Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3)** are standard for most documents — reports, essays, manuals.

**Roman numerals (i, ii, iii)** are traditionally used for front matter — table of contents, preface, introduction — before the main body starts at page 1.

**"Page X of Y" format** is useful for legal documents and forms where the reader needs to know both the current page and total page count.

**Custom start number:** If your PDF is a chapter from a larger document, set the starting number to match the chapter's position (e.g., start at page 45 for Chapter 3).

Standard page numbers are for general documents. Bates numbering is a legal-specific system that stamps a unique identifier (often with a prefix like "DOC-0001") on every page for discovery and evidence tracking.
