How to Create Online Forms Free — Drag-and-Drop Form Builder

Build online forms with WhiskFile's free drag-and-drop form builder. Add fields, validation, conditional logic, and collect submissions — no coding required.

Collecting information should not require a developer. WhiskFile's Form Builder lets you create professional online forms with a visual drag-and-drop interface, set up validation rules and conditional logic, host the form on a shareable link, and track submissions from your dashboard. No coding, no account required for basic forms.

Building Your First Form

Step 1: Open the Form Builder

Go to the Form Builder tool. You start with a blank canvas and a field palette on the left side.

Step 2: Add Fields

Drag fields from the palette onto your form. Available field types include:

  • Text input — Single-line text for names, emails, short answers
  • Text area — Multi-line text for comments, descriptions, detailed responses
  • Email — Text input with built-in email format validation
  • Phone — Formatted phone number input with country code support
  • Number — Numeric input with optional min/max range
  • Dropdown — Select one option from a predefined list
  • Radio buttons — Choose one option from a visible set
  • Checkboxes — Select multiple options from a set
  • Date picker — Calendar-based date selection
  • Time picker — Time input with hour/minute selection
  • File upload — Allow respondents to attach files (configurable size and type limits)
  • Rating — Star rating scale (1-5 or 1-10)
  • Signature — Draw or type a signature directly in the form
  • Section header — Visual divider to organize long forms into logical groups
  • Hidden field — Pass data through the form without displaying it (useful for tracking sources)

Step 3: Configure Each Field

Click any field to open its settings panel:

  • Label — The question text displayed to the user
  • Placeholder — Hint text shown inside the empty input
  • Help text — Additional instructions displayed below the field
  • Required — Toggle whether the field must be filled before submission
  • Validation — Set rules like minimum/maximum length, regex patterns, or custom error messages
  • Default value — Pre-fill the field with a default answer

Step 4: Add Conditional Logic

Conditional logic shows or hides fields based on previous answers. This keeps forms short and relevant.

Example: A customer feedback form has a dropdown asking "How would you rate your experience?" with options Excellent, Good, Fair, and Poor. You add a condition: if the answer is "Fair" or "Poor," show a text area asking "What could we improve?" If the answer is "Excellent" or "Good," that field stays hidden.

To set up conditional logic:

  1. Select the field you want to conditionally show
  2. Click Add Condition
  3. Choose the trigger field, the operator (equals, contains, is greater than, is not), and the value
  4. Save the condition

You can chain multiple conditions with AND/OR operators for complex branching.

Step 5: Customize Appearance

Adjust the form's visual style:

  • Theme — Choose a color scheme or enter your brand colors
  • Logo — Upload your company or project logo for the header
  • Submit button text — Change from the default "Submit" to something specific ("Send Application," "Request Quote")
  • Thank-you message — Customize the confirmation message shown after successful submission

Step 6: Set Up Notifications

Configure what happens when someone submits your form:

  • Email notification — Receive an email for each new submission with the response data
  • Redirect — Send the respondent to a specific URL after submission (useful for linking to a thank-you page or next step)
  • Response limit — Automatically close the form after a set number of responses
  • Deadline — Close the form at a specific date and time

Hosting and Sharing

Once your form is ready, click Publish. You get:

  • Direct link — A hosted URL you can share via email, chat, or social media
  • Embed code — An iframe snippet to embed the form on your website
  • QR code — A scannable code for printed materials, posters, or event displays

The form is hosted on WhiskFile's infrastructure. You do not need your own server or website to collect responses.

Tracking Submissions

All submissions appear in your WhiskFile dashboard under the form's Responses tab:

  • View individual responses with timestamps
  • Export all responses as CSV or Excel for analysis
  • Filter and search through submissions
  • Delete individual responses

For Pro users, submissions are retained indefinitely. Free-tier forms retain responses for 30 days.

Use Cases

  • Event registration — Collect names, emails, dietary preferences, and session choices
  • Customer feedback — Post-purchase surveys with conditional follow-up questions
  • Job applications — Collect resumes (file upload), cover letters, and contact details
  • Contact forms — Simple name/email/message forms embedded on your website
  • Order forms — Product selection with quantity fields, pricing calculations, and payment notes
  • Internal requests — IT support tickets, supply requests, time-off requests

Getting Started

Open the Form Builder, drag your first field onto the canvas, and publish a working form in under five minutes. No sign-up required for basic forms with up to 50 responses.
