You've received a PDF on your Android phone and you need to edit it. Problem: PDFs aren't editable. You need a Word document. And you're not at your computer.

There are three ways to convert PDF to Word on Android. The first one works on every Android phone without installing anything.

Method 1: Browser-Based Converter (Recommended)

The simplest approach — use Chrome (or any browser) to convert the file online.

  1. Open Chrome on your Android phone.
  2. Go to whiskfile.com/tools/pdf-to-word.
  3. Tap "Choose file" and select the PDF from your Downloads, Google Drive, or file manager.
  4. Wait 5–15 seconds for conversion.
  5. Tap Download to save the .docx file.

The Word document goes to your Downloads folder. You can open it directly in Google Docs, Microsoft Word for Android, or WPS Office.

Quality check: Conversion accuracy depends heavily on the source PDF. Here's what to expect:

| PDF Type | Conversion Quality | |---|---| | Text-heavy business document | 95%+ — clean, editable text | | Simple tables and lists | 90%+ — usually intact | | Complex multi-column layouts | 70–80% — may need manual cleanup | | Scanned/photo PDF | Text not extracted — need OCR first | | Heavy graphics/design | 50–60% — layout usually breaks |

For scanned PDFs (photos of documents), run them through OCR first to extract text, then convert the OCR'd PDF to Word.

Method 2: Google Drive (If You Already Use It)

Google Drive has a built-in PDF-to-Docs converter. It's not great for complex layouts, but it's convenient if the PDF is already in your Drive.

  1. Open the Google Drive app.
  2. Upload the PDF to Drive (tap + → Upload).
  3. Once uploaded, tap the PDF to open it.
  4. Tap the three-dot menu (⋮) and select "Open with" → "Google Docs."

Google Docs creates a new document with the extracted text. Formatting is minimal — don't expect tables, columns, or precise layout reproduction. This works well for plain text documents and poorly for everything else.

Limitation: Google's converter handles single-column text documents adequately but destroys multi-column layouts, tables, and anything with complex formatting.

Method 3: Microsoft Word App (Free with Limitations)

If you have the Microsoft Word app installed:

  1. Open the Word app.
  2. Tap Open and navigate to the PDF (from storage or OneDrive).
  3. Word will attempt to convert it. Tap OK when warned about formatting changes.

Word's converter is decent for business documents but requires a Microsoft 365 subscription for some features. The free tier handles basic conversions.

Tips for Better Results

Check the PDF first. Before converting, open the PDF and try selecting text. If you can highlight individual words, the PDF contains real text and will convert well. If you can only select the whole page as a block, it's a scanned image and needs OCR first.

Compress before converting. If the PDF is very large (20+ MB), conversion takes longer on mobile. Compress it first to speed up the process.

Edit in Google Docs. After conversion, the easiest editor on Android is Google Docs. It opens .docx files directly and saves changes back to the same format. No need for Microsoft Office.

Re-export when done. After editing in Google Docs or Word, export back to PDF: File → Download → PDF Document (in Docs) or File → Save as PDF (in Word).
