Hoe splits je een PDF-bestand: 4 methoden uitgelegd

Splits een PDF op paginabereik, bestandsgrootte, bladwijzers of in losse pagina's. Deze handleiding behandelt alle 4 de methoden met stapsgewijze instructies.

Splitting a PDF sounds straightforward — but there are four meaningfully different ways to do it, each suited to a different situation. Here's which method to use and when.

Method 1: Split by Page Range

Use this when: You want to divide a document at specific page numbers. For example: pages 1–10 go in one file, pages 11–25 in another.

  1. Go to the Split PDF tool.
  2. Upload your PDF.
  3. Enter the page ranges you want to create (e.g., 1-10, 11-25, 26-50).
  4. Click Split.
  5. Download each part separately, or download all as a ZIP.

Example use cases:

  • Splitting a 60-page report into three 20-page sections for different reviewers
  • Extracting chapters from a book PDF
  • Creating a "highlights" file from pages scattered through a long document (use Extract PDF Pages for non-consecutive pages)

Method 2: Split by File Size

Use this when: You need each output file to be under a specific file size — typically for email attachments or upload limits.

  1. Go to the Split PDF by Size tool.
  2. Upload your PDF.
  3. Enter the maximum file size per part (e.g., 9 MB for Outlook, 18 MB for Gmail with safe margin).
  4. Click Split.
  5. Download the parts as a ZIP.

The tool automatically calculates where to break the PDF so each part stays under your size limit. Parts are labelled part-1.pdf, part-2.pdf, etc.

Email attachment guidelines:

  • Gmail: keep parts under 18 MB (the 25 MB limit applies to encoded size, which is ~33% larger)
  • Outlook: keep parts under 9 MB (corporate IT policies often restrict further)
  • Most corporate servers: 5–10 MB to be safe

Method 3: Split by Bookmarks

Use this when: The PDF has a bookmark/outline structure and you want one file per chapter, section, or chapter heading.

  1. Go to the Split PDF by Bookmarks tool.
  2. Upload your PDF.
  3. Choose the bookmark level to split at (Level 1 = top-level chapters, Level 2 = subsections).
  4. Click Split.
  5. Download the resulting files — each named after the bookmark heading.

Best for: Technical manuals, legal documents with numbered sections, academic papers, reports with defined chapters.

Requires: The PDF must have bookmarks already set (you can see these in the PDF viewer's sidebar as a table of contents). PDFs without bookmarks cannot be split by this method.

Method 4: Split in Half

Use this when: You want to divide a PDF into two roughly equal parts without thinking about specific page numbers.

  1. Go to the Split PDF in Half tool.
  2. Upload your PDF.
  3. Click Split.
  4. Download Part 1 and Part 2.

The tool calculates the midpoint (by page count) and splits there. A 40-page PDF becomes two 20-page files.

Best for: Quick division when you don't need precise control — sharing a large document between two people, fitting a PDF into a file size limit where splitting in half is roughly sufficient.

Extract Specific Pages (Not a Split)

If you want to pull out specific non-consecutive pages — say, pages 3, 7, 15, and 22 from a 50-page document — that's not a split, it's an extraction.

Use the Extract PDF Pages tool:

  1. Upload your PDF.
  2. Enter the pages to extract (e.g., 3, 7, 15, 22).
  3. Download the resulting PDF containing only those pages.

The original PDF is unchanged.

Choosing the Right Method

| What You Want | Use | |---|---| | Divide at specific page numbers | Split PDF (by range) | | Each part under X MB | Split PDF by Size | | One file per chapter/section | Split PDF by Bookmarks | | Two roughly equal halves | Split PDF in Half | | Specific non-consecutive pages | Extract PDF Pages | | First N pages only | Extract PDF Pages → pages 1 to N | | Everything except specific pages | Split then Delete Pages |

After Splitting: Rename Your Files

Split output files are numbered generically (part-1.pdf, part-2.pdf). Before sharing or archiving, rename them to something descriptive:

  • Q1-Report-Section-1.pdf
  • Contract-Appendix-A.pdf
  • Manual-Chapter-3-Installation.pdf

This saves significant confusion for anyone receiving the files later.

Quick Answers

Does splitting a PDF reduce quality? No. Splitting is a structural operation — it rearranges pages into new files without re-encoding any content. Text, images, and formatting are identical to the original.

Can I split a PDF and recombine it later? Yes. Use Split PDF to divide, and Merge PDF to recombine. The combined file will be identical to the original (technically the file structure may differ, but all content will be preserved).

Can I split a password-protected PDF? Remove the password first with the Unlock PDF tool, then split.

What's the maximum page count I can split? There is no page count limit on splitting. Files up to 50 MB (free) or 500 MB (paid) can be split regardless of page count.
