I keep seeing blog posts that "compare" PDF tools without actually using them. They list features from marketing pages and call it a review. That's not helpful.

So I ran the same five real-world tasks through iLovePDF, Smallpdf, and WhiskFile, timing each one and checking output quality. I used the free tier of each tool — no paid accounts, no special access. What you read below is what you'd actually experience.

The Test Setup

Five tasks, chosen because they're the most common PDF operations people need:

  1. Compress a 47 MB photo-heavy brochure (8 pages, embedded 300 DPI photos)
  2. Merge 5 separate PDF files (mix of text and images, 42 pages total)
  3. Convert a 15-page business report from PDF to Word
  4. Split a 60-page PDF into individual pages (pages 10–22)
  5. Add watermark text ("CONFIDENTIAL") to a 4-page contract

I ran each test three times and took the median result. Tests were performed on a MacBook Pro over 100 Mbps WiFi, Chrome browser, September 2026.

Task 1: Compress PDF (47 MB → ?)

| Tool | Output Size | Reduction | Time | Quality | |---|---|---|---|---| | WhiskFile | 8.9 MB | 81% | 4 sec | Sharp at 100%, slight softness at 300%+ zoom | | iLovePDF | 11.2 MB | 76% | 6 sec | Good. Similar quality to WhiskFile | | Smallpdf | 9.8 MB | 79% | 5 sec | Good. Slightly more aggressive on text rendering |

All three did a solid job. WhiskFile got the smallest file, but the difference is marginal. At this quality level, you'd never notice the difference on screen or in print at normal sizes.

Verdict: Tie. All three handle compression well.

Task 2: Merge 5 PDFs (42 pages total)

| Tool | Time | Formatting Preserved | Bookmarks Kept | |---|---|---|---| | WhiskFile | 3 sec | Yes, all pages perfect | Yes | | iLovePDF | 4 sec | Yes | No bookmarks in output | | Smallpdf | 5 sec | Yes | No bookmarks in output |

WhiskFile preserved the original bookmark structure from the source files. iLovePDF and Smallpdf both produced correct merged documents, but dropped bookmarks. If your PDFs have chapter bookmarks and you want them in the merged output, that matters.

Verdict: WhiskFile slightly ahead for bookmark preservation.

Task 3: PDF to Word Conversion (15-page report)

This is where things get interesting, because PDF-to-Word conversion is genuinely hard.

| Tool | Text Accuracy | Table Formatting | Image Placement | Headers/Footers | |---|---|---|---|---| | WhiskFile | 97% | Good — minor column width differences | Correct positions | Preserved | | iLovePDF | 95% | Acceptable — some merged cells split | Correct | Dropped one footer | | Smallpdf | 96% | Good | Correct | Preserved |

All three did well on this particular document. The real challenge is complex layouts with multi-column text, text boxes, and watermarks — accuracy drops across all tools for those.

Verdict: Close. WhiskFile had marginally better table handling, but I wouldn't switch tools over it.

Task 4: Split PDF (Extract pages 10–22)

| Tool | Time | Metadata Preserved | |---|---|---| | WhiskFile | Instant (client-side) | Yes | | iLovePDF | 3 sec (uploaded to server) | Yes | | Smallpdf | 3 sec (uploaded to server) | Partial |

WhiskFile processes splits entirely in the browser — the file never leaves your device. For a confidential document, that's a meaningful difference. iLovePDF and Smallpdf both upload the file to their servers.

Verdict: WhiskFile wins on speed and privacy.

Task 5: Add Watermark

| Tool | Customization | Quality | |---|---|---| | WhiskFile | Font, size, color, opacity, rotation, position | Clean rendering | | iLovePDF | Font, size, color, opacity, rotation | Clean | | Smallpdf | Limited — basic text overlay only | Acceptable |

Smallpdf's watermark tool felt underpowered compared to the other two. iLovePDF and WhiskFile both gave granular control. WhiskFile added position-specific placement (top-left, center, bottom-right, etc.) which iLovePDF also offers.

Verdict: WhiskFile and iLovePDF tied. Smallpdf behind.

Free Tier Comparison — This Is Where It Gets Real

The tasks above show similar quality across all three. What actually differentiates these tools is how much you can do for free.

| Limit | WhiskFile | iLovePDF | Smallpdf | |---|---|---|---| | Free tasks per day | 7 (registered), 3 (anonymous) | No hard daily limit, but throttled | 2 tasks/day | | Max file size (free) | 50 MB | 15 MB* | 5 MB* | | Watermarks on output | Never | Never | Never | | Account required | No | No | No | | Upload to server | Only for server tools (many run client-side) | Always | Always | | File deletion | Auto-deleted after 1 hour | Auto-deleted (claimed, timing unclear) | Auto-deleted after 1 hour |

*iLovePDF and Smallpdf free limits vary by tool and change frequently. The limits above were observed during testing in September 2026.

Smallpdf's 2-task-per-day limit on the free tier is by far the most restrictive. If you need to compress and then merge (two operations), you've hit your daily limit. iLovePDF is more generous but applies restrictions unpredictably — I could compress three files before getting a "slow processing" notice on the fourth.

WhiskFile gives you 7 tasks per day on a free registered account. No tricks, no unpredictable throttling.

What About AI Features?

All three now offer AI-powered PDF features, but availability differs:

| AI Feature | WhiskFile | iLovePDF | Smallpdf | |---|---|---|---| | AI Summarize PDF | Pro | Pro | Pro | | AI Chat with PDF | Pro | Pro | Pro | | AI Translate PDF | Pro | Paid | N/A | | AI Auto-Redact PII | Pro | N/A | N/A | | AI Smart Compress | Pro | N/A | N/A |

WhiskFile has the broadest AI feature set. iLovePDF has ChatGPT integration. Smallpdf has AI summary and chat. None of the three offer AI features on their free tier — this is consistent across the industry.

Tool Count

| Category | WhiskFile | iLovePDF | Smallpdf | |---|---|---|---| | Organize (merge, split, etc.) | 12 | 8 | 6 | | Edit | 11 | 5 | 4 | | Convert | 21 | 12 | 10 | | Security | 6 | 3 | 3 | | Optimize | 13 | 4 | 3 | | Image | 20 | 2 | 4 | | Total | 83 | ~34 | ~30 |

WhiskFile has significantly more tools, especially for image conversion, PDF optimization, and specialized operations like Bates numbering, deskewing, and split-by-bookmarks.

The Bottom Line

Choose WhiskFile if: You want the most generous free tier, the most tools, client-side processing for privacy, and don't mind a newer brand. Best for power users who hit daily limits on other platforms.

Choose iLovePDF if: You want a familiar interface, ChatGPT integration, and a good free tier. Best for moderate use — a few PDF tasks per week.

Choose Smallpdf if: You prioritize UX polish and only need 1–2 tasks per day. The interface is the most streamlined of the three. Best for occasional, light use.

Honestly, for the core operations — compress, merge, split, convert — all three work well. The free tier limits are what should drive your choice, especially if you use PDF tools daily.
