Electronic signatures on PDFs are legally valid and binding in the United States (ESIGN Act, 2000), the European Union (eIDAS Regulation), the United Kingdom (Electronic Communications Act), and most other countries. You don't need a physical ink signature for the vast majority of documents. Here's how to sign a PDF for free in under 2 minutes.

How to Sign a PDF with WhiskFile

  1. Go to the Fill and Sign PDF tool.
  2. Upload your PDF.
  3. Click the Signature button in the toolbar.
  4. Choose how to create your signature:
    • Draw: Use your mouse or touchscreen to draw your signature
    • Type: Type your name and choose from signature-style fonts
    • Upload: Upload a photo of your handwritten signature (JPG or PNG)
  5. Click to place the signature on the page. Drag to reposition. Resize using the corner handles.
  6. Fill in any other fields (date, initials, typed text) using the text tool.
  7. Click Apply and download the signed PDF.

The result: A PDF with your signature embedded as a flat image overlay. Anyone who opens the file will see your signature on the page.

Are Electronic Signatures Legal?

Yes — with some nuances:

Universally accepted:

  • Business contracts
  • Employment agreements and offer letters
  • NDAs (non-disclosure agreements)
  • Purchase agreements and sales contracts
  • Rental and lease agreements
  • Consent forms and waivers
  • Most internal company documents

May require wet ink (physical signature) or advanced eSignature:

  • Wills and trusts (varies by jurisdiction — some US states and EU countries now accept eSignatures)
  • Notarized documents (require a live notary in most jurisdictions)
  • Court filings (court-specific rules apply — check local rules)
  • Real estate closings (many now accept eSign; check your state/country)
  • Certain government forms (varies by agency)

For high-stakes transactions (real estate purchases, loan agreements, estate documents), verify the specific requirements with the receiving party or your attorney before relying solely on an electronic signature.

Signature Types Explained

There are three levels of electronic signatures, with increasing legal strength:

Simple Electronic Signature (SES): What WhiskFile provides — an image of your signature placed on the PDF. No cryptographic verification. Legally sufficient for most commercial contracts under ESIGN/eIDAS.

Advanced Electronic Signature (AES): Cryptographically linked to the signer's identity using a digital certificate. Stronger legal standing in the EU. Used by DocuSign, Adobe Sign, and similar platforms.

Qualified Electronic Signature (QES): Requires a government-issued certificate. Has the same legal weight as a wet ink signature in the EU. Required for specific high-value legal acts in some jurisdictions.

For everyday business contracts, vendor agreements, and employment documents, a Simple Electronic Signature (what WhiskFile provides) is legally sufficient in the US, UK, and EU.

Adding Initials and Date

Most contracts require initials on each page and a date field alongside the signature.

In the Fill and Sign PDF tool:

  • Use the Text tool to add your initials to each page (type JD and position over the initials line)
  • Add the current date as a text box over the date field
  • Use the Signature tool for the actual signature field

Sending a Signed PDF

Once you've signed and downloaded, you can:

  • Email as an attachment — just attach the downloaded PDF to your email
  • Upload to a shared drive — Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive
  • Request the other party to sign — they can use any PDF signing tool on their end

If you need a countersignature workflow (where you sign, send, they sign, you both get a copy), a dedicated eSignature platform like DocuSign is designed for that multi-party flow. WhiskFile's signing is designed for single-party signing.

Protecting the Signed PDF

After signing, you may want to:

Flatten the PDF — Use the Flatten PDF tool to merge the signature into the base layer of the PDF, making it impossible to separate or move the signature afterward. This is recommended before archiving signed contracts.

Add password protection — Use the Protect PDF tool to restrict editing or copying of the signed document.

Lock the document — Set permissions to "no modifications" so the recipient can see it but not alter it.

Quick Answers

Is drawing a signature with a mouse as legally valid as signing on paper? In most jurisdictions, yes. The ESIGN Act in the US does not require a specific signature method — it requires intent to sign. A mouse-drawn signature demonstrates intent.

Can I add my signature to a password-protected PDF? No — protected PDFs that restrict editing cannot be signed with an overlay tool. Remove the password first using the Unlock PDF tool, sign, then optionally re-apply protection.

Do I need to keep a copy of the signed PDF? Yes. Both parties should retain copies of the signed document. There is no central registry for electronically signed documents.

Can the other party tell if I changed the PDF after signing? With a Simple Electronic Signature (image overlay), no — the PDF can technically be modified after signing. If legal enforceability and tamper-evidence are critical, use a platform that adds a digital signature certificate (DocuSign, Adobe Sign), which detects post-signature modifications.
