A text-based PDF contains actual text characters stored in the file — you can select and copy text directly in a PDF viewer. These convert to Word with high accuracy, preserving paragraphs, fonts, and basic formatting.

A scanned PDF is a photograph of a document embedded in a PDF container. There is no actual text, only pixels. Converting a scanned PDF to Word requires OCR (Optical Character Recognition) to first read the image and extract the text. Accuracy depends on scan quality — clear, high-contrast scans produce near-perfect results.

1. Go to the WhiskFile PDF to Word tool.

2. Upload your PDF. Files up to 50 MB are accepted on the free plan.

3. If your PDF is scanned (image-only), enable the "Apply OCR" option to extract text from the images.

4. Click "Convert to Word". Processing time depends on the number of pages — a 20-page document typically takes 5–15 seconds.

5. Download the DOCX file. Open it in Microsoft Word or Google Docs for editing.

For text-based PDFs, WhiskFile preserves:

- Paragraph structure and line breaks - Bold, italic, and underline formatting - Headings and their hierarchy - Tables (when clearly defined in the PDF) - Lists (bulleted and numbered)

What is not preserved: complex multi-column layouts, precise font matching (fonts not installed on your system will be substituted), and vector graphics (converted to images in the DOCX).

PDF is a presentation format — it describes where each character appears on the page in absolute coordinates, not the logical document structure Word uses. Conversion involves re-inferring that structure, which is imperfect for complex layouts.

For best results: avoid converting PDFs that were created from complex InDesign or Publisher layouts. Simple Word documents that were saved as PDF convert back with the highest fidelity.

Enable OCR when: - You cannot select text in the PDF in a viewer (it's image-only) - The PDF was scanned from physical paper - The conversion produces garbled or empty content without OCR

OCR adds processing time (roughly 2–5 extra seconds per page) but is essential for scanned documents. WhiskFile uses Tesseract 5 OCR, which supports over 100 languages.
